Letter from the Mayor - U.S. Census Bureau
August 12, 2020
Dear Residents of Marion County,
I’m writing today to let you know that only about half of our Marion County residents have participated in the 2020 U.S. Census so far. We have just two months until the census is closed, and we must make sure that all of our residents are counted and that our County receives the funding and representation in Congress that we deserve.
When we kicked off the census earlier this year, I talked about how the U.S. Constitution mandates that a census be taken every ten years. The U.S. Census Bureau is charged with managing this and providing the latest facts and figures regarding the nations’ people, places and economy. This year marks the first time in history that the Bureau offered online options, as well as phone and mail.
The primary constitutional purpose for the census is to determine the correct number of congressional seats each state will have for the next ten years. In addition, population counts from the census help determine how $800 billion in federal funding is given to states, counties and cities across the U.S. This directly impacts the services we provide to all residents of Marion County.
If you haven’t already responded to the census online or to a census taker, please participate today by visiting www.census.gov.
My team put together a list of common questions and answers we hear about the census and how it affects Marion County. If you’re interested, you can find that list by visiting https://marioncountytn.net.
Thank you for working with me to make Marion County everything it can be for each of us and all our families. I’m counting on you to make sure Marion counts in this census!
Sincerely,
Mayor David Jackson
