Only Half of Marion County is Currently Represented in the U.S. Census 
Counting on You to Make Sure Marion Counts

JASPER, Tennessee — (Aug. 12, 2020) With just two months until the closure of the 2020 U.S. Census, Marion County stands at a 51.3% response rate, lower than the state and nationwide averages. 

“We want everyone in Marion County to be represented in government and to get our community the proper funding for all our residents,” says Marion County Mayor Dan Jackson. “That means we have to raise our response rate to match and surpass the state average of 62%. We’re counting on you to make sure Marion counts!”

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census be taken every ten years. The U.S. Census Bureau is charged with managing this and providing the latest facts and figures regarding the nations’ people, places and economy. This year marks the first time in history that the Bureau offered online options as well as phone and mail.

The primary constitutional purpose for the census is to determine the correct number of congressional seats each state will have for the next ten years. In addition, population counts from the census help determine how $800 billion in federal funding is given to states, counties and cities across the U.S.
