Take the Scenic Route: A Fall Drive Through Marion County

Fall is the perfect time to slow down and take in the changing landscapes of Tennessee's mountains and valleys. In Marion County, you don't have to travel far to find beautiful scenery, lakeside views, and overlooks worth the stop.

Whether you're planning a leisurely afternoon drive or looking to stretch your legs with a short hike, here are a few places to add to your fall bucket list.

Take in the View at Snooper's Rock

Located in Prentice Cooper State Forest, Snooper's Rock offers sweeping views of the Tennessee River Gorge. Surrounded by wooded hillsides, the overlook is a beautiful place to take photos and enjoy the colors of the season. Depending on your chosen route, you can reach the overlook by hiking or driving along designated forest roads. Be sure to check road conditions and access before heading out. Prentice Cooper State Forest is occasionally closed during scheduled, seasonal hunts, so double-check the Tennessee hunting schedule for listed closures before you go.

Fun fact: Prentice Cooper State Forest is entirely in Marion County! Because there is no post office nearby, the location is sometimes listed as Chattanooga when you navigate there, but we’re proud to say Prentice Cooper is a Marion County jewel.

Enjoy the Outdoors at Foster Falls

For a combination of fall foliage and waterfall scenery, head to Foster Falls. The 60-foot waterfall is tucked into a forested gorge within South Cumberland State Park, offering a beautiful backdrop for an autumn outing. Visitors can enjoy the overlook near the parking area or explore nearby trails for a closer look at the surrounding landscape.

Explore Little Cedar Mountain

If you're up for a hike, Little Cedar Mountain Trail offers a 3-mile loop through wooded terrain, rocky outcroppings, and scenic views of Nickajack Reservoir. The trail is a great way to experience the area's natural beauty as the seasons change.

Finish With a Lakeside Stop

Round out your fall outing with a visit to Marion County Park, located along Nickajack Reservoir near Jasper. With waterfront scenery, picnic areas, and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, it's a relaxing place to take a break, snap a few photos, or simply soak up a crisp fall afternoon.

Make a Day of It

The beauty of fall in Marion County is that you can make the day your own. Choose a scenic overlook, pack a picnic, explore a trail, or spend the afternoon enjoying the views along Nickajack Reservoir. Wherever the road takes you, remember to pull over only in designated safe areas and check trail and road conditions before your visit.

This fall, take the scenic route and discover the natural beauty waiting right here in Marion County.
