WHEREAS, Tennessee's 7.3 million residents rely on our over 60,000 miles of rivers and streams, high quality aquifers, wetlands and groundwater, with over 100,000 miles of public water infrastructure to provide clean drinking water and then safely return wastewater to the environment; and

WHEREAS, water is essential to the health, safety, and well-being of Tennessee communities, and supports local economies, agriculture, manufacturing, power generation, recreation and the state's natural environment; and

WHEREAS, a day without water would bring life in Tennessee to a standstill, disrupting public health services, emergency response, local businesses, schools and the foundational functions of daily life; and

WHEREAS, Imagine a Day Without Water is a National Day of Action on October 1 5, 2026 that invites people across the country to recognize the essential role of water in our lives and communities; and

WHEREAS, the water infrastructure in Tennessee's cities, towns, rural communities and utility districts is aging and requires ongoing investment, and sustainable water and wastewater systems strengthen communities by supporting economic growth, protecting public health and natural resources; and

WHEREAS, continued investment in Tennessee's water infrastructure ensures that clean, safe water remains available for residents today and for future generations, and secures a bright and prosperous future for communities across the state; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee ranks among the top states in the nation for drinking water quality, demonstrating the effectiveness of the state's commitment to delivering clean and reliable water; and

WHEREAS, the State of Tennessee recognizes that water is essential to our quality of life, health, and economic competitiveness and acknowledges the importance of raising awareness about the value of all water through the "Imagine a Day Without Water" campaign;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Tennessee is committed to investing in sustainable, equitable and reliable water infrastructure, recognizes the invaluable contributions of the state's utility personnel and operators, who ensure safe, dependable water services daily, and pledges to continue safeguarding and improving the quality of our drinking water for current and future generations.

NOW, THEREFORE, l, David Jackson, Marion County Mayor, do hereby proclaim October 15, 2026 as "Imagine a Day Without Water" Day in Tennessee and encourage all citizens to join me in this worthy observance.
