A Guide to Lesser-Known Hiking Trails in Marion County

Marion County is known for its nature and hiking trails - you may have heard of Denny Cove Trail, Prentice Cooper State Forest, and Fiery Gizzard Trail - but there are also plenty of beautiful, lesser-known trails in the area. As the weather warms up and hiking trails start getting busy, consider trying out one of these hidden gems. If you're hiking with a dog, remember to keep them on a leash and always pick up after your pet. 

1. East Rim Overlook - Franklin State Forest 

East Rim Overlook is a 2.4 mile out-and-back, kid-friendly trail. On this hike, you’ll reach an overlook with a view of the surrounding hills in Franklin State Forest. According to AllTrails, people often spot wildlife and wildflowers while exploring the trail. 

2. Pot Point Nature Trail - Prentice Cooper State Forest 

If you’re looking for a relatively easy loop trail, check out this 3.8 mile loop in Prentice Cooper State Forest. The hike will take you up the side of the mountain, then back down and along the river to the trailhead. The trail is kid and dog-friendly, and hikers regularly see wildflowers and wildlife. 

3. Inman Point Road, Shingle Loop, and Moore Ridge and Limekiln Loop - Prentice Cooper State Forest 

This 9.1 mile loop trail is great for hiking and off-roading. This trail takes you through beautiful forests and scenic overlooks. AllTrails classifies the trail as moderately challenging and says it takes an average of 4 hours and 25 minutes to complete. 

4. Little Cedar Mountain Pond Trail - Jasper, Tennessee

This 4.3 mile out and back trail, next to Nickajack Lake, is great for anyone looking for a classic, easy hiking trail. This trail is kid-friendly, and hikers are unlikely to encounter many other people. While exploring the trail, you’ll find a pond and an overlook.
